SAVE - Storytelling as Video Expression
In January 2004, Pinch Me Films launched a pilot project - called SAVE - that
teaches video production classes in after school programs at Berkeley public
middle schools. Youth, aged 10-16 address issues such as relationships, drugs
and alcohol, peer pressure, self-respect and violence by writing, shooting and
editing short films.
As part of SAVE, Pinch Me Films works in collaboration with Berkeley
Community Media - Alameda County's local public access channel. Through this collaboration,
students will get a glimpse into the inner workings of a TV station as well
as gain access to professional grade cameras, sound equipment and production
studios.
By the end of the class, students will have completed a short film that will
broadcast on local cable channels 28 and 33 (BCM), the Pinch Me Films website,
in schools, and community groups. Pinch Me Films will also organize an annual
student film festival to screen all the shorts created throughout the year.
Students who show exceptional interest in the after school video classes will
have the opportunity to participate as production interns for the Pinch Me Films'
educational video series The Silence
of Sex.
We hope to expand this pilot project into other urban school systems in the
Bay Area, including Oakland, Richmond, Albany, El Cerrito and Emeryville in
addition to launching five one-week summer intensive video camps at Berkeley
Community Media's studios.
